Dismissed and forgotten for 14 years, what has and will become of the ex ACSA steel works?

In the small Italian town of Carrù lay the remains of the old ACSA steelworks and warehouse, left in a highly abandoned state for years ever since it was shut down by the Brescia Forest Guard for the crime of “processing of special waste”. Investigations into the matter led nowhere, and the building was delisted in 2004.

Brescia’s prosecution office later announced that the court seals previously placed on the waste, which was stored at the site, had been removed. However, as of 2018 the situation concerning the materials had become unmanageable and amongst Carrù’s local comunity a question arose: who is responsible for dismantling the old steelworks? This situation of investigations, decay, and injustices is typical of Italy.

The mayor of Carrù, Nicola Schellino, learned that the materials stored in the former steelworks were not harmful. This news was based on the court ruling from the Brescian prosecutor and which was confirmed the following year by the Court of Appeal. However, the waste had to be processed and integrated into a production cycle of the ACSA company.

ACSA Steel Forgings is a worldwide company specialised in hot stamping and steel extrusion. Since its founding in 1935, ACSA has been producing hot-forged parts of various types.

In 2022 the ACSA company had the waste materials removed, and in 2024 the remains of the steelworks and accompanying buildings were demolished to make way for a new solar panel farm. The only visble remains of the age old industrial area are the train tracks which connected the steelworks with the nearby train station.
