Black Horse

Xploration date 14/04/2023
The breathtaking mural of a black horse at the historic Feccucci Dardi military stables revitalizes the site, igniting community passion and hope for a future that honors its rich equestrian legacy while bridging the gap between past and present.

The former Feccucci Dardi military stables now feature a stunning and unexpected mural of a black horse, which breathes new life into a site steeped in history. This striking artwork not only pays homage to the equestrian legacy of the stables but also serves as a poignant reminder of the bond between humans and horses, particularly in a military context. The mural, vibrant and meticulously detailed, contrasts sharply with the surrounding decay, highlighting the potential for renewal nestled within the ruins of the past. It has quickly become a focal point for local artists and residents alike, sparking conversations about the future of this historic site and its role in the community.

Originally established in the second half of the 19th century as a military range, this area is now part of the Meisino River Park, created by the Municipality of Turin in 2001. The stables consist of a main building, several stables, and what was once a riding track, all set against the picturesque backdrop of the surrounding natural landscape. Named after the captain of the Novara Armored Group, who died in 1942 while defending his squadron from British tanks in North Africa, the stables occupy land that has been used since the late 1800s for military purposes. The riding track and its associated buildings were constructed at the convergence of two rivers, within a flood-prone area. There is no record of when the stables were first established, but their significance to military history is undeniable.

Some structures were already in place by 1969, as noted in a revision by the Military Geographic Institute. Until 2011, the entire complex served as a facility for the Military Application School and the Italian Army Military Studies Institute, providing equestrian training with two open stables that could accommodate 32 horses. The echoes of hooves and the sounds of instructors calling commands still linger in the air, despite the buildings now standing silent and empty.
After the military vacated the area, it was transferred to the Italian state in 2015, which then handed it over to the Municipality of Turin (at no cost). Since that time, the complex has been left completely abandoned, and numerous efforts to redevelop it have been unsuccessful so far.

Between 2019 and 2020, the municipal administration took steps to secure the adjacent green spaces, but the historic structures remain in a state of disrepair to this day. This neglect raises questions about the preservation of historical sites and the challenges of integrating them into modern urban landscapes. Community members have expressed a desire to see the area revitalized, advocating for projects that could transform the stables into a cultural hub or educational center, celebrating the rich history of the site while fostering a deeper connection between the past and the present.
The mural of the black horse stands as a symbol of hope, a visual call to action for the city to invest in its heritage and reimagine the future of the Feccucci Dardi stables.
