An old railway station in northern Italy, opened in 1882 to transport lithic materials, has begun renovation in 2023 after years of abandonment and service cessation since 1966.
This old railway station, located in the hinterland of two Piedmont region valleys in Italy, was part of a railway line that opened on December 21, 1882.
The main purpose of its construction was to transport lithic materials to promote a more intensive use and increase their export to various countries of Europe. To this end, a private consortium commissioned in 1877 to draw up the preliminary project of a railway between two small Piedmontese towns in branch of the train line which was then under construction.
The regular service was activated on 7th September 1885 and operated with steam traction; traffic remained at low levels since the beginning of the twentieth century. From 1905 it was incorporated into the state rail service.
In 1921 the train line was electrified, and operated with this system until May 28 1961 when it was converted to the 3,000 volt direct current system.
The passenger rail service was abolished in 1966 and replaced by a bus service despite protests. The plants were disabled in 1983, and the line was definitively closed.
Today, in 2023, the renivation of this old railway station has begun. The abandoned building, like many others, attracted the wrong sort of people and remained closed for many years. For now the works have only affected the roof, but with renovations complete, this building will have a new life.
